Mount Tecumseh is one of the Crowsnest Pass's most unique winter playgrounds. From open alpine bowls to sheltered subalpine forests and ridgelines with sweeping views, it's a place that has drawn our community to ski, hike, and explore together for generations.
There is a proposed logging project that is expected to begin in the area as early as August 2026, impacting alpine and subalpine terrain above Chinook Lake, including areas adjacent to the Crowsnest Nordic ski trails. If you're interested, we encourage you to attend the following open house events, where community members will have the opportunity to learn more and share feedback about the proposed plan:
- March 19, 2026 | 4-7pm: Alberta Forest Open House @ the Crowsnest Community Hall
- April 2, 2026 | 4-7pm: West Fraser (logging company) Open House @ the Hillcrest Fish and Game Hall
On March 28, we are planning a group ski on the east side of Mount Tecumseh. We will head up into the forest above Chinook Lake beyond the Crowsnest Nordic Ski Club's trails and follow old trails that lead up into the alpine. This is your chance to experience the landscape firsthand, ask questions, and connect with others who love skiing in this forest.

Event Details
- Date: Saturday, March 28, 2026
- Time: 10am (prepare for a 4-5 hour ski)
- Meeting location: Allison/Chinook main parking lot and trailhead (Google Maps)
- Length: 14km
- Vertical: 400m
- Route: Download the GPX File
We recommend using steel-edged alpine skis and climbing skins mounted with an AT or telemark binding. However, if you are a very strong and capable skier on steel-edged Nordic touring skis with a fish scale base, it is possible to ski this route.
This may not be the best outing for your first time off groomed trails. If you're concerned about the difficulty but are comfortable skiing on Nordic trails, feel free to join us for the first part of the ski out to the warming hut (~ 3km), where you can decide whether to continue beyond the groomed trails or turn around on your own.
Please note that this is not a guided trip and participants are 100% responsible for themselves and their own safety. It is very important to be prepared to be self-suffficient in the mountains. For this ski it is mandatory that you have in your pack:
- Food + drink for a 4h ski tour
- Additional insulated layers (top & bottom)
- Spare warm gloves
- Emergency blanket or bivy
- Helmet
We will personally be bringing the following additional items:
- Backpack
- Layers to ski uphill in
- Down jacket
- Down shorts
- Ultralight bivy sack
- Rescue kit
- First aid kit
- Water/snacks/hot drink
- InReach (there is limited service)
- Cell phone
- Goggles/glasses
- Warm toque
Please come prepared with your favourite ski gear (alpine touring, Nordic backcountry, or telemark) and everything you need to be self-sufficient in the mountains in winter. We hope to see you out there!
