The Turtle Boil

A Turtle Boil may be called upon the first double digit temperature recorded during Winter in Blairmore. The Boil will commence at sunrise following the announcement and remain in effect for five days. The sight of runners emerging on the slopes of Turtle Mountain in such unison has led to the term “Turtle Boil”, which compares the sight to that of turtles hatching on a beach.

📆 Winter Waiting Period: Sunday Dec 21, 2025 - Friday March 20, 2026

In celebration of hitting double-digit temperatures for the first time during the winter season, spry hosts an annual Turtle Boil High-Pointing Strava challenge. The goal of the challenge is to log the most elevation gain and return to your starting point in a single sub 60-minute activity on the Turtle Mountain Trail.

In addition to awarding a Male and Female winner, there is a Local Legend trophy for the person with the most attempts.

We can’t wait to watch all your amazing efforts and see you all out on the trail!

👟 Recommended Gear: Studded shoes and micro spikes are strongly encouraged, plus all the necessary clothing and gear to be self sufficient and safe in the mountains in winter.

Results

The Winners

  1. The person (men’s and women’s category) with the most elevation gain in a single sub 60 min activity will get mega kudos and a coveted turtle trophy
  2. The person with the most Turtle Boil attempts during the window will get equal bragging rights and a coveted turtle trophy

You are welcome to make your attempt(s) at any time during the event window or come join the spry team for a mass start Boil event (to be announced).

The Rules

  1. The most Vert Wins. HOWEVER, the activity’s Elapsed Time must be under 60mins. Over 60mins will result in a heartbreaking disqualification
  2. You must start and finish in the same location! Start your watch at the low point right before the Turtle Mountain trail sign. How high can you make it knowing you still have enough time to return to the start in under 60 mins?! This is the fun part!
  3. No “hill repeats” during the activity. Style matters. Simply go up as far as you can and then return to the bottom in less than 60 mins
  4. Activity needs to be posted publicly to Strava
  5. Make sure to tag @Spry Active Club in the activity description
  6. This is an unsanctioned event. You are completely responsible for your own safety. Be prepared for being in the mountains in the Winter
