The Sasea is a fully sanctioned and permitted race inspired by the Dipsea Race, runners are given head starts based on their age and gender. This system allows a wide range of participants—ranging from young children to senior citizens—to compete on a relatively level playing field. The first person to cross the finish line is the overall winner, regardless of when they started the race.

The Rules
The race follows a format similar to the Dipsea Race, which has head starts based on age and gender. Our vision is to have a diverse group of participants racing each other to the finish line. The first person to cross the finish line is the winner, regardless of their starting wave.
- Check-In: You will receive a punch card with your starting wave number at Check-In. Use this card to punch at the control points. If you are unfamiliar with orienteering punch cards and control points, we will have an example at check-In and the pre-race meeting at.
- Starting Waves: Based on your age and gender, we’ll give you a starting wave position when you check in. The first wave will start at 10:00am sharp (Girls age 8) and the last wave will start 33 minutes later (Men aged 20-25). Prior years' winners will receive a 2 min penalty for 3 years.
-
Control Points: There are 3 unmanned checkpoints along the route (see strava route for exact locations). Participants must reach each control point to complete the race. This is not an orienteering race, so please stay on the trails and follow the flagged route as closely as possible. If you’re scouting the route, you’ll know you’ve done it correctly if you pick up the strava segment called “The Sasea 2025”.
Control points are located at:
i. The last false summit of Sasky (3.7km from start)
ii. The creek crossing on the Beaver Stamp trail (7.5km from start)
iii. Near the top of the second climb West Coleman Trails (8.8km from start) - Mandatory Gear/Aid Stations: There are no mandatory gear requirements and no aid stations along the route. Be prepared for fall weather in the mountains and potential wildlife encounters. Carry bear spray and enough nutrition and water to sustain yourself throughout the run.
- Finishing the run: When you cross the finish line, add your fully punched card to the finisher's line in the same order that you finished.
- Cut-Off Time: The cut-off time is 1:15 PM, 3.25 hours from the start of the first wave.
- Age Restrictions: There are no age restrictions for this event. For minors, it is the responsibility of their parents/guardians to decide if they are capable of participating. We have provided starting waves down to age 8. Considering the remoteness and difficulty of this event we strongly recommend all children under the age of 16 be accompanied by an adult and are capable of running the respecting time cut-off.
- Preparedness: The course will be well marked and we will sweep the course to ensure all participants are accounted for, but you are completely responsible for your own safety. Be prepared for being alone in the mountains.
And The Winner Is...
The first person to cross the finish line will be crowned the winner, regardless of their starting wave. This format ensures a thrilling and competitive race for all participants.
Get ready for an unforgettable trail running experience on the beautiful Sasky trails. We look forward to seeing you at the starting line.
